  • "[...] We will try to answer the following questions 1. To what extent did levels of class voting differ across democratic industrialized countries in the postwar period? 2. To what extent was there a decline in levels of class voting in these countries over that period? In doing so we endeavour to improve on previous studies in two ways: first by collating and analysing an extensive dataset from no less than twenty countries over a period (1945-90) of up to almost fifty years; secondly, by investigating whether the use of a more or less detailed class schema leads to different conclusions regarding differences and trends in class voting. More precisely, we want to know to what degree variation in manual/nonmanual class voting between countries and periods is the result of variations over time and across countries in the composition of manual and nonmanual classes. The answer to these questions will indicate to what extent conclusions derived from earlier, smaller-scale studies are robust.
