The dissertation discusses the use of learning level diagnostics for literacy and basic education work. As those affected find it particularly hard to deal with text-based testing procedures, tests for determining learning needs should be designed in such a way as to avoid fear and resistance. The author examines the current state of learning level diagnostics from the viewpoint of students and analyses their action strategies. A more intimate understanding for the problems of adult functional illiterates in test situations may contribute to a better utilisation of the potential of learning level diagnostics.
