    SUBSCASE is to indicate whether a respondent is from the original sampling frame or is substituted for some reason (interview not obtained because of invalid address, no contact, refusal, etc.) (en)
  • Note:
    / DE: ISSP 2021 uses a two-stage random sample. In the first step, there is a random selection of communities/ sample points. In a second step, there is a random sample of persons officially registered at their first place of residence (Germans are legally obliged to register). The German register is not organized in one central register, but organized in 5.283 local registers administered by municipalities. The local registers are allowed but not obliged to submit information for scientific purposes. 6 municipalities did not cooperate and did not deliver information. These sample points had to be replaced by others with the same structural characteristics prior to the fieldwork. Substitution of any individual case was not allowed during the fieldwork.
    / SR: Code 2 - Address substitution included: Interviewers obtained a response form with the address. In case an address was uninhabited, they were instructed to go for the nearest inhabited dwelling to the right; Code 3 - Within-household substitution was used when: the targeted respondent was deceased, ill, or long-term absent from the household. In particular in the Interior, there is no way to revisit. Dwellings and (head of) households are often ill-defined here. (en)
