    COMMENT ON BIRTH: The aim of this variable is to measure the respondent's year of birth. BIRTH can be asked as an alternative to asking about AGE; the ISSP prefers BIRTH being asked. If BIRTH is not asked, it must be computed by DATEYR 'year of interview' minus AGE 'age of respondent'.

  • Note:
    / DE: The German ISSP 2021 was fielded as mail survey. All instructions reported in this documentation are not directed to the interviewer but to the respondent.
    / IS: Year of birth is one of the variables that also come with the sample list from the National Registry of Iceland. People who chose the options 'Other' or 'Prefer not to answer', however, were coded as 'No answer' in the data.
    / JP: Respondents were asked to indicate the era in which they were born and then the year within the era (F2G - Era: 1 Meiji, 2 Taisho, 3 Showa, 4 Heisei; F2N- Year: Meiji 1-45 = 1868-1912, Taisho 1-15 = 1912-1926, Showa 1-64 = 1926-1989, Heisei 1-31 =1989-2019).
    / JP: Respondent’s birth year can be known from the sampling frame.
    / NL: The questionnaire was performed using a subsample of a long-running panel in the Netherlands called the LISS panel. This question comes from the background variables of this panel study.
