  • LT_ETHN - Lithuania: Country specific origin country/ ethnic group/ ethnic identity/ family origin

    What is your nationality/ ethnicity?
    (en)
  • Note:
/ LT: In Lithuanian there is a single term "tautybė" for both English terms "nationality" and "ethnicity". The term "tautybė" in its many grammatical forms is used in questionnaires by numerous research and statistical programs.
Thus the use of Lithuanian term "tautybė" as a translation of English terms "ethnicity" or "nationality" has its methodological grounding and tradition.
The concept of "citizenship" is not used, as in Lithuania there is a rule that restricts having citizenship of only one country and in 2011 residents with Lithuanian citizenship constituted 99,2% of the population (Statistics Lithuania, www.stat.gov.lt).
Similarly the concept of race is not applicable within Lithuanian contextual settings as there is lack of racial diversity. Race is not even measured by Statistics Lithuania.
The concepts of "family origin" or "respondent’s country of origin" are also not widely used in Lithuania, as Lithuania did not witness great waves of immigration in the past decades and thus even residents with non-Lithuanian ethnicity would indicate they or their parents were born in Lithuania.
