  • Note:
/ AU: The above three questions were used to code the variable j7_anzsco_l3 (unit group level) and j7_anzsco_l4 (occupation level) according to the Australian Bureau of Statistic’s Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) First Edition, 2006. The recoding of occupations from ANZSCO to ISCO-88 took place in 3 stages.
    1. ANSCO codes were recoded to ISCO-88 codes at the occupation level (6 digit ANSZCO codes) if there was a direct match.
    2. If a respondent had not been coded up to the occupation level, or if the there was No direct match at the occupation level, ANSZCO codes were recoded at the unit group level (4 digit ANZSCO codes).
    3. If a recode was not possible in either steps 1 or 2 above, occupations were coded manually to ISCO-88 codes by referring to the original responses and descriptions of the occupations as provided by the respondent.
/ CZ: Modification of KZAM (Czech national ISCO-88 related classification) recoded into ISCO-88 (ILO).
/ DE: ISCO88 taken from ALLBUS 2012 and constructed from respondent’s current occupation (main job): If respondent currently not employed or part time employed but employed in the past then last occupation (main job) taken according to ISCO88 (ILO) with some additional codes which are already recoded.
/ ES: Spanish questionnaire has a double coding of occupation: ISCO 88-ILO and the Spanish National Classification of Occupations (CNO-94), which is an official adaptation of ISCO 88.
/ FR: French classification of the occupations and the social categories (PCS 1994) were recoded. Because of incomplete information to describe the occupation, a code with 1 zero at the end corresponds to the 2 digits ISCO code and a code with 2 zeros at the end corresponds to the one digit ISCO code.
/ GB-GBN: ISCO88 (COM) is derived from [XSOC200] using the translation table; where the frequency of any 4 digit ISCO code in the ISSP dataset is less than 5, the code is reduced to 2 digits.
/ NL: ISCO-88 codes are converted from national occupation codes, provided by Statistics Netherlands 1984, which is very close to ISCO-68.
/ NO: STYRK (Standard Classifications of Occupations) based on, but not identical to ISCO88-COM. STYRK codes are recoded into ISCO88 ILO according to the syntax available in the BV documentation.
/ SE: A recoding scheme between the national occupation scheme SSYK and ISCO88-COM is available.
/ SK: Slovak national ISCO-88 recoded into ISCO-88 (ILO)
/ TR: Open ended question answers are then coded according to (ISCO) occupation descriptions into ISCO88
/ US: US Occupation Codes OCC80 from GSS are recoded to ISCO88.
