  • Index of cultural practice
    (en)
  • Derivation:
The CULTURAL PRACTICE INDEX is based on the answers to question qb1 (qb1_1 to qb1_9).

[qb1 How many times in the last twelve months have you…?
qb1_1 Seen a ballet, a dance performance or an opera
    qb1_2 Been to the cinema
    qb1_3 Been to the theatre
    qb1_4 Been to a concert
    qb1_5 Visited a public library
qb1_6 Visited a historical monument or site (palaces, castles, churches, gardens, etc.)
qb1_7 Visited a museum or gallery
qb1_8 Watched or listened to a cultural programme on TV or on the radio
    qb1_9 Read a book]

According to the Eurobarometer Report "Special Eurobarometer 399 – Cultural access and participation" (page 7) the index was constructed by first attributing scores to the frequency of participation (“Not in the last 12 months” or DK = scores 0; “1-2 times” = scores 1; “3-5 times = scores 2; “More than 5 times” = scores 3) and then adding up the nine items resulting in a score between and 0 and 27 for each respondent. In addition the respondents have been qualified in accordance to the total frequency of mentioning the category “More than 5 times”. This procedure ends up in four different index levels which have been derived as follows:
1: "Very high" if adding up a score of 21 to 27 or having selected “More than 5 times” five or more times
2: "High" if adding up a score of 14 to 20 or having selected “More than 5 times” three or four times
3: "Medium" if adding up a score of 7 to 13 or having selected “More than 5 times” once or twice
4: “Low” if adding up a score of 0 to 6, but excluding respondents who at least once selected “More than 5 times”.

?:groupDescription
(de)
  • Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
