Derivation:
This variable groups answers to question Q.E5 (characteristics of carbon dioxide) as far as considered as not applying: "It is flammable" (code 1 in V394), "It is harmless" (code 1 in V397), and " It is explosive" (code 1 in V398). Respondents who do not mention any of the specified characteristics are coded 8 ("Not any characterstic specified"). Respondents which do not mention any characteristic which do not apply or answering "None" (code 1 in V401) or "DK" (code 1 in V401) are coded 0 ("No characteristic specified which does not apply").

Note:
The question wording (Q.E5) does not refer to ordinary concentration levels only, as does the official EU-Report in the following conclusion: "In ordinary atmospheric concentration levels, CO2 is safe to breathe, healthy and harmless, and not a water pollutant." (TNS Opinion & Social: Special Eurobarometer 364 / Wave 75.1: Public Awareness and Acceptance of CO2 capture and storage. Brussels, May 2011. page 45)
For question module E "Carbon capture and storage" (V368 to V513) only part of the countries (France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Greece, Spain, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania) participated. The POPULATION SIZE WEIGHT W91 separates this group of countries and adapts the samples regarding population size and universe description. For more information see V52.

Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
