"This chapter discusses the difficulty in arriving at truly comparable measures of education, the main source of which is identified as being grounded in actual differences in the educational systems of different countries. In order to develop theoretically based guidelines for measurement, the concept of education is clarified by discussing the multi-faceted consequences of education. Based on these theoretical deliberations, frequently used approaches to education are evaluated including number of years of schooling, educational scoring and typologies such as the ISCED and CASMIN classifications. In the empirical section similarities and differences of various measures of education with regard to their respective explanatory power for a broad array of dependent variables are analyzed. These dependent variables are directly derived from the theoretical discussion of the various consequences of education. As data from four countries are used it is possible to distinguish between country-specific characteristics and more general trends. On the basis of both the theoretical considerations and the empirical analyses, the desirability of a most detailed measurement of education in emphasized, especially with regard to the inclusion of formal qualifications in the form of categories in surveys and subsequent analyses. If possible additional information on vocational training and on the type of school (public vs. private) should also be collected. As years of schooling is measured quite differently in individual countries any comparison might be ambiguous. In addition, from the countries investigated only in the United States did this variable emerge as a better measure than formal qualifications".
