  • In this article, we aim to underscore the significance of documentary couple research, amplifying its presence within sociological discourse while refining its methodology. For this purpose, we present and discuss two research projects in which couples were studied through couple interviews and analyzed the results using the documentary method. We adopt a constructivist and knowledge-focused perspective and view couple relationships as ongoing production processes or, more precisely, as co-constructed realities based on shared and jointly produced experiential knowledge. The couple interview proves to be a suitable form of data collection, allowing for the consideration of interactivity and relationality in interpretations and actions. As a focal point for examination, we find the concept of Schwellen-Wendepunkte [threshold turning points] particularly fruitful in couples' relationships, defined by LENZ (2009, p.105), as these can lead to upheavals concerning certain elements of knowledge. LOGEMANN focused on couples moving in together for the first time. The associated co-construction processes were reconstructed using a documentary-hermeneutic and comparative analysis. EGLI explored couples' gender relations in connection with starting a family and migration. She employed documentary discourse analysis, emphasizing the performative aspect. Considering the different variations and emphases in the projects, we regard the documentary method as a rich repertoire of analytical tools, offering valuable insights for sociological research on couples.
