  • This article proposes a basic curriculum for introductory courses and for summer-schools in methods of quantitative historical social research. The authors do not claim to submit a contribution to professional curricular research, they just reflect and systematize the experiences they gathered in their seminars and as organizers of the first Zentrum-Herbstseminar that took place from September, 22nd to October, 4th 1980 at the Center for Historical Social Research in Cologne. The authors advocate the establishment of a differentiated and continually repeated program of summer-schools to promote and to improve quantitative historical social research. At the universities of German speaking countries introductory courses in quantitative methods are still infrequent and only exceptionally obligatory. Moreover, they are not appropriate to those scholars who are already graduated. The basic curriculum is therefore designed to complement university education of historians and especially to prepare beginners who want to apply quantitative methods in their research. We propose to match the didactic problems caused by the heterogenious knowledge, motivation, and interests of participants with an elaborated sequence of (1) plenary sessions - where a general indtroduction into methodology is given, (2) of working groups - where theoretical knowledge is practically applied in coding and analyzing historical material, (3) of reports given by the participants - where research-designs are presented and discussed, and (4) of special advisory lessons - which are designed to solve individual problems of understanding and application.
