BVQ_10. TYPORG1
Do/ did you work for a for-profit organisation or for a non-profit organisation?
(Please tick one box only.)
COMMENT ON TYPORG1: TYPORG1 deals with the main goal of the organisation the respondent is working for. 'For-profit' refers to material profit, understood as a gain for the benefit of the owners of the business. Organisations which generate revenue, but use this to subsidise a designated organisational purpose other than the owners' profit, are counted as non-profit organisations. Thus, economic activities of charitable, scientific, political, or environmental organisations, etc. should not be understood as for-profit economic activities. State-owned companies or collectively owned organisations such as cooperatives will in contrast often be for-profit organisations - if the main goal is material profit. .......................................................................................................................................

Note:
/ CN: High number of missing values, as agricultural work is not counted as paid work and both, people who are currently working in agriculture but have never done non-agricultural work in the past just like respondents who are currently unemployed and have never done non-agricultural work in the past, were filtered out before the above question was asked. Their missing answers are included in code -9 'No answer'. / DK: All respondents who answered that they are employed in the public sector were not asked about the purpose of the business they work in. This has been compensated for by the Danish ISSP team by imputing the value '2' for these respondents for the variable 'TYPORG1'. / ES: TYPORG1 and TYPORG2 are asked about in one question, containing five answer options: Public Administration, Public company, Private company, Non profit organization, House-keeping. For TYPORG1, Public company, Private company and House-keeping were assigned to code 1 'For-profit organisation', and Public Administration and Non profit organization to code 2 'Non-profit organisation'. / FR: 'Works for publicly owned firm', 'Works for a private firm', 'Self-employed' and 'Works for family's business' are encoded to code 1 'For-profit'. 'Works for government or local communities' and 'Works for an association, a mutual company or a cooperative' are encoded to code 2 'Non-profit'. / NZ: The order of the questions in the questionnaire was MAINSTAT/ WORK, WRKHRS, ISCO08, WRKSUP, NSUP, TYPORG2, TYPORG1, EMPREL. / RU: EMPREL (without number of employees), TYPORG1 and TYPORG2 are derived from the same question. / TW: EMPREL, TYPORG1 and TYPORG2 were derived from the same question.
