In which country was your mother born?

    (Please write in.)

COMMENT ON M_BORN: Countries were recoded according to the numerical 3 digits ISO3166-1 code. 'Country' refers here to states only, not to sub-national regions or areas. If the mother's country of birth does not exist anymore under the former name, the current term of the country where the birthplace is located should be written in. For reasons of data anonymization, responses on countries could also be recoded to supranational level according to the United Nations country or area codes of the M49 standard.

  • Note:
/ AT: Answers to the last answer option were assigned manually to the right country code.
/ CN: Question not included in China's questionnaire; information imputed based on the fact that almost 100 percent of respondents' parents were born in China.
/ DE: Father's and mother's country of origin asked in tabular design. Preliminary data coded according to ISO 3166. In order to protect individual respondents from data disclosure it was necessary to combine some original ISO 3166-categories into regional M49 codes before data publication. The respective categories are those countries identified as 'critical' in terms of low number of cases in the German 2018 Micro Census datset.
/ DK: For privacy reasons, countries with a higher risk of identification or with few observations were recoded into subcontinental categories of the M49 standard.
/ ES: For those who were not born in Spain, there was a drop down list of precoded categories for each country in the online questionnaire and an open-ended question to write in in the paper questionnaire. Countries at first coded according to INE's standard list, then transferred to ISO 3166-1. To avoid disclosure risk, some of the data in M_BORN have been aggregated using the UN M49 standard.
/ FI: Open-ended question at first classified according to ISO3166-1. For respondents whose mother was born outside Finland, subcontinental categories of the M49 standard were used. Responses from respondents from the Åland region were recoded to code -9 'No answer' for privacy issues.
/ HR: Open-ended question, subsequently answers encoded to ISO 3166.
/ IS: Behind the second option there was an open textbox. The answers were coded afterwards.
/ IS: In order to avoid disclosing too much information about the respondents, for some respondents M49 regions were coded instead of ISO 3166 country codes.
    / IT: Open-ended question.
    / LT: Open-ended question.
/ NO: To avoid disclosure risk, some of the data in F_BORN and M_BORN have been aggregated using the UN M49 standard.
/ NZ: For privacy reasons, countries with a higher risk of identification and with few observations were recoded into subcontinental categories of the M49 standard.
    / RU: Open-ended question.
/ SE: To avoid disclosure risk, category 2 open responses were coded according to the coarser M49 area codes. Category 1 was recoded to ISO 3166 code 752. Those ticking the box that mother or father was not born in Sweden but did not write in the country of origin were coded as 950 'Other countries'.
/ SK: Category 3 open responses recoded following ISO 3166.
/ TH: Open-ended question, subsequently countries encoded to ISO 3166.
/ US: Respondents are not asked for parents' country of birth, only if their parents were born in the United States or not.
