  • Note:
In Q2 and Q3 (v11-v20), income was surveyed as follows in the respective countries:

AT: Monthly income before taxes in EUR.
AU: Yearly income before taxes in AUD.
BG: Monthly income before taxes in BGN.
CH: Monthly income after taxes in CHF.
CL: Monthly income after taxes in CLP.
CZ: Monthly income after taxes in CZK.
DE: Monthly income before taxes in EUR.
DK: Yearly income before taxes in DKK.
FI: Monthly income before taxes in EUR.
FR: Monthly income in EUR after deduction of social security contributions, but before deduction of taxes.
GB-GBN: Yearly income before taxes in GBP.
HR: Monthly income after taxes in HRK.
IL: Monthly income after taxes in ILS.
IS: Monthly income before taxes in ISK.
IT: Monthly income after taxes in EUR.
JP: Yearly income before taxes in JPY.
LT: Monthly income after taxes in EUR.
NO: Yearly income before taxes in NOK.
NZ: Yearly income before taxes in NZD.
PH: Yearly income before taxes in PHP.
RU: Monthly income (not specified in the question whether gross or net income, but people in Russia more often mean net salaries).
SE: Monthly income before taxes in SEK.
SI: Monthly income after taxes in EUR.
SR: Monthly income after taxes in SRD.
TH: Monthly income before taxes in THB.
TW: Monthly income before taxes in TWD.
US: Yearly income before taxes in USD.
    VE: Monthly income in VES.
ZA: Monthly income before taxes in ZAR.

/ CH: It is clear that for some jobs (particularly chairman of a large national company/ cabinet minister), some respondents gave an answer based on a yearly earning (also because it is more common to speak about a yearly pay for such jobs). However, there are also numerous keying mistakes where it was too difficult to disentangle keying errors from a yearly answer. An individual manual check was started without convincing results that the problem could be sufficiently solved for all cases. Therefore, the original answers were kept as were.
/ FR: In Q2 and Q3, the instruction for answering these questions used the term 'before taxes' because of the new tax regulations on wages (withholding tax).
/ JP: Variables for Q2 and Q3 includes high missing rates (~ 50 percent), this goes back to a different question format consisting on an additional comment in the original Japanese questionnaire to say 'I don't know' if one does not know.
/ VE: In 14 years, between 2007 and 2021, the Venezuelan currency has undergone three currency conversions in which 14 zeros were subtracted. A process of hyperinflation began in November 2017 and ended four years later. In August 2022, Venezuela was still a country with one of the highest inflation rates in the world. So many changes in such a short period of time are likely to have an impact on the information provided by the respondents, so the validity of the information might be considered limited.
