  • Note:
/ AT: SPEMPREL has been provided according to the former format for SPEMPREL including the four categories 1 'Employee', 2 'Self-employed without employees', 3 'Self-employed with employees' and 4 'Working for own family's business', following the ISSP Guidelines in effect until ISSP 2018. Hence, no information is available for the self-employed respondents about their number of employees. They were encoded to code 6 'Self-employed with employees; no numbers available'.
/ GB-GBN: Categories 2, 3 and 4 can't be distinguished, so category 7 'Self-employed with or without employees' was created. Category 5 'Working for own family's business' can't be computed.
/ IS: By mistake, the categories used were the same as for the SPEMPREL variable for ISSP 2018 and not updated to the ISSP 2019 categories. As a consequence, no information is available on the exact number of employees for the self-employed spouses/ partners. Original answers for category 3 'Self-employed with employees' to the Icelandic questionnaires were encoded to code 6 'Self-employed with employees; no numbers available' for the integrated data file.
/ NZ: By mistake, this question was asked according to the standard in effect for ISSP 2018, and therefore failed the new separation by number of employees for self-employed for ISSP 2019.
/ SR: The ranges in the numbers of employees for the self-employed partners, described in codes 3 and 4 in SPEMPREL, differ from the standard.
/ US: The US data capture all spouse variables regardless of habitation status. In contrary, the US data only capture cohabitating partner variables, not information from non-cohabitating partners.
/ VE: SPEMPREL has been provided according to the earlier format for SPEMPREL in effect until ISSP 2018, including the four categories 1 'Employee', 2 'Self-employed without employees', 3 'Self-employed with employees' and 4 'Working for own family's business'. No information is available for the self-employed respondents about their number of employees. They were encoded to code 6 'Self-employed with employees; no numbers available'.
/ ZA: SPEMPREL was surveyed using the former format for SPEMPREL that was valid until ISSP 2018. For self-employed respondents, the information on the number of employees can unfortunately not be provided retrospectively. Such cases were encoded to an extra code, code 6 'Self-employed with employees; no numbers available'.
