    / BG: The ISSP standard code 3 'No partner' was no answer option in the question on PARTLIV in Bulgaria's questionnaire, because PARTLIV has been filtered by responses to MARITAL and only married respondents and those living with a partner without legal marriage were asked about PARTLIV. However, mere cohabitation does not constitute legal marital status. Consequently, respondents who live with a partner without being legally married needed to be recoded to one of the legal marital statuses in MARITAL. For harmonization reasons, they were coded to MARITAL code 6 'Never married'. This has an impact on the crosstabulation of PARTLIV and MARITAL - actually, neither widowed, nor divorced, nor separated respondents, nor unmarried respondents were asked on PARTLIV - but by the recoding process for MARTIAL now the crosstabulation of PARTLIV and MARITAL displays a few substantial answers for the unmarried respondents. PARTLIV code -4 'BG: NAP (C. 3-5 in MARITAL + not living with a partner without legal marriage)' indicates what lies behind.
    / NZ: 'No partner' (code 3) was no answer option in the questionnaire, since PARTLIV was filtered by MARITAL and only married respondents, respondents in a civil union or in de facto-relationship were asked about whether they live with the partner.
    / RU: PARTLIV and MARITAL are derived from the same question. In fact, divorced and widowed respondents were not asked about having a partner and if they are living together with a steady partner or not. In hindsight, divorced and widowed respondents were assigned to 'No partner' in PARTLIV.
    / TW: One answer option in MARITAL was 'Cohabitation'. 16 respondents selected this answer option. Those cases were assigned to code 1 'Yes, have partner; live in same household' in PARTLIV.
    / US: PARTLIV was recoded from POSSLQ and POSSLQY, each of which was asked to half of the ISSP sample. Both variables differ only in their second answer option: 'I am living as married and my partner and I together live in the same household' (POSSLQ)/ 'I have a steady partner, and we live in the same household' (POSSLQY). The US data does not request further partner information for respondents whose partners (as opposed to spouses) do not cohabitate.
