  • Note:
    / CH: EDUCYRS is asked in two steps, asking separately for years of apprenticeship, which can be done as dual education (in enterprise and school) as well as in fulltime schools. EDUCYRS is then computed by adding the numbers of years of the two questions. A significant number of respondents gave no answer the first question (number of years in full-time education), but answered the second (number of years in apprenticeship). As the most frequent compulsory schooling are 9 years, a correction was made for reintroducing those cases on the variable EDUCYRS.
    / DK: Answers 50 years+ were recoded to missing values.
    / FR: EDUCYRS=Age at the end of education minus 6 (school starting age); if still in education (MAINSTAT=3): AGE minus 6 (school starting age).
    / IS: Please note that EDUCYRS might not include full years of education. According to the 1907 law farmer's children were supposed to be at least 2 months a year in school and children who lived in towns for 6 months a year. This difference between rural and 'urban' areas stayed for a long time and in fact stayed in some form all up until 1991. Respondents could be adding up the months they attended school and transform that into whole years since they went to school for such a short periods at a time. When adding up, they might have attended school for one or two months each semester (for the age 7/ 8/ 9 until 12/ 13/ 14). Originally, the values included decimal numbers to reflect the true situation. The values were retrospectively rounded to whole numbers following the required ISSP standard for this variable.
