  • Note:
/ CH: Not asked if self-employed; self-employed and respondents working for own family's business were recoded on 'Private employer' in TYPORG2 a posteriori.
/ DK: The data generated with the question documented above was used to generate both EMPREL and TYPORG2 (comp. 'Background Variable Documentation').
/ ES: The Spanish questionnaire for ISSP 2018 includes an instruction for interviewers to make this question refer to the main wage earner in the household if the respondent has never worked (3 in WORK). These data are not included here.
/ FR: By mistake, the answer option 'Works for a private firm' was not included in the question on WRKTYP. Cases for this answer option could be created, however, the number of cases may be slightly lower than in other years.
/ FR: 'Works for government or local communities' and 'Works for publicly owned firm' are encoded to code 1 'Public'. 'Works for an association, a mutual company or a cooperative', 'Works for a private firm', 'Self employed' and 'Works for family's business' are encoded to code 2 'Private'.
/ GB-GBN: The data includes self-employed as private employer, just like private sector firms or companies and charity and voluntary sector organisations (churches, trade unions). Public employers comprise nationalised instrustries or public coporations (Post Office, BBC) and other public sector organisations (Civil Service, NHS hospitals, Police).
/ GE: Pre-Testing showed that in some cases people are/ were (self-)employed informally or employed by individuals who could not be classified as a public/ private organisation. Therefore, this question was fielded with the additional answer option 'none'.
/ NZ: Due to lack of details, non-profit organisations are encoded to 'public'.
/ RU: EMPREL, TYPORG1 and TYPORG2 are derived from the same question.
/ TW: EMPREL, TYPORG1 and TYPORG2 were derived from the same question.
