DEGREE: Comparative - Highest completed degree of education: Categories for international comparison
The aim of this variable is to measure the highest completed education level/ degree of the respondent in order to facilitate international comparison.
Procedure: The degree of education is asked country-specific (see variables AT_DEGR-ZA_DEGR). Then, the harmonized ISSP categories for the variable DEGREE are to be computed from the country-specific degree variables. Correspondence lists between country-specific categories and categories of the ISSP DEGREE variable must be reported in detail in the BV documentation template for each country. Since DEGREE is a slightly re-arranged subset of ISCED-97, instructions for actually coding ISCED-97 from nat_DEGR can be used in each country to support the coding of DEGREE. ........................................................................................................................................

Note:
/ CL: The bridging from the national education variable to the harmonized ISCED 97 variable is difficult as it does not match the classification used in Chile (see CL_DEGR). During the data integration, data for DEGREE were harmonized by means of CL_DEGR and EDUCYRS to meet the ISCED 97 standard. According to ISCED97 'primary schools are supposed to give students a sound basic education in reading, writing and mathematics … They in principle cover six years of full time schooling.' In countries where there is no separate primary school, but the first school form is a compulsory school that ends after the 8-10 grade, codes 0 – 3 of the standardized DEGREE variable need to be constructed by means of the EDUCYRS 'Years of full-time schooling' variable: those, who report to have attended less than 6 years fall into category 0 'No formal schooling'. Those who report to have finished 6 years of schooling should be coded 1 'Primary School'. Who finishes compulsory school successfully has to be coded 2 'Lower Secondary'. / DE: Please note that the original data allows for multiple answers. Respondents with multiple educational degrees are coded according to their 'highest' educational entry in the ISSP degree variable. See also DE_DEGR. / FI: Respondents who finished compulsory school successfully (see FI_DEGR) are coded to category 2 'Lower secondary'. / GB-GBN: Primarily, the British DEGREE variable recorded qualification levels. For the sake of integration/ harmonization, respondents with 'No secondary qualifications' (see code 1 in GB_DEGR) originally encoded to 'No answer' (code 9) in DEGREE were retrospectively recoded at best for DEGREE based on the variable EDUCYRS (if EDUCYRS <6: DEGREE=0; if EDUCYRS 6+7 years: DEGREE=1; if EDUCYRS=8-11: DEGREE=2). / KR: Incomplete national educational categories were assigned to one level below in DEGREE. / TW: For respondents with elementary school as highest level of education (code 3 in TW_DEGR) the question on the number of years of school education (EDUCYRS) was used to assign respondents with at least 6 years of primary school into code 1 in DEGREE. / US: DEGREE codes 0-2 are constructed by using EDUCYRS next to US_DEGR.
