    Source variable: v261

    For each country not adopting the Euro as currency, the national currency is first converted into Dollars and then into Euros. This allowed retrieving the exchange rate for most of the countries from the same source, namely the IMF Global Economic Monitor (GEM). This source offered the exchange rate from national currency to dollars for all EVS countries, except for Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The IMF GEM also allowed us to convert dollars to euro, while the exchange rates of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina come from the World Bank.
    Once calculated the conversion rate national country/Euro, the income categories have been corrected for the purchasing power parity (PPP). PPP is derived from the IMF World Economic Outlook Database (October 2019 Edition). For Montenegro, the World Bank statistics 2019 were used. The year(s) in which the data were collected, form(s) the basis for the calculation of the PPP rates. For all countries, the mean exchange rate was calculated over the survey period.
    A linear income variable has been constructed taking the mid-points of the country-specific categories corrected for PPP. For the first category, the mid-point is the upper bound minus half the range of the second category, e.g., if (1) <500 Euro and (2) 500-800 Euro, then the mid-point of the first category is: 500-(800-500)/2=350 Euro. For the mid-point of the lastest category, a same range for the last and the penultimate interval was assumed, e.g., if (one but last category) 7.500-10.000 Euro and (last category) >10.000 Euro, then the mid-point of the last category will be: 10.000+(2.500/2)=11.250 Euro. The mid-points have been finally divided by 1000.

  • The European Values Study is a large-scale, cross-national and longitudinal survey research program conducted under the responsibility of the European Values Study Foundation since 1981. The cross-sectional surveys, repeated in a 9-year cycle, cover a broad range of topics on central areas of life such as work and leisure time, family and sexuality, religion, politics and ethics. The EVS holding includes integrated datasets on every EVS wave and, in addition, the national datasets for the 1999 and 2008 waves. Questions repeated at least twice in EVS, or EVS and WVS, are cumulated in the EVS Trend File. The EVS Trend File can easily be merged with the World Values Survey (WVS) Trend File into the Integrated Values Surveys Data File. (en)
