  • Reasons for last taking antibiotics - summarized
    (en)
  • Derivation:
This variable is based on the answers to question qc3 (qc3_1 to qc3_16).

[qc3 What was the reason for last taking the antibiotics that you used?

qc3_1 Pneumonia (an infection causing an inflammation of one or both lungs)
qc3_2 Bronchitis (inflammation and swelling of the bronchi, the airways that carry airflow from the trachea into the lungs)
qc3_3 Rhinopharyngitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose and pharynx)
    qc3_4 Flu
    qc3_5 Cold
    qc3_6 Sore throat
    qc3_7 Cough
    qc3_8 Fever
    qc3_9 Headache
    qc3_10 Diarrhea
    qc3_11 Urinary tract infection
    qc3_12 Skin or wound infection
    qc3_13 Other (SPONTANEOUS)
qc3_14 Do not wish to answer (SPONTANEOUS)
    qc3_15 Refusal (SPONTANEOUS)
    qc3_16 DK]

According to the Special Eurobarometer 478 Report "Antimicrobial Resistance" (page 18) respondents who only took antibiotics to treat illnesses (coded 1 "Mentioned" in qb3_1 to qc3_5 only) are coded 1 ("Illness only)" in variable qc3t. Respondents who only took antibiotics to treat symptoms (coded 1 "Mentioned" in qc3_6 to qc3_12 only) are coded 2 ("Symptom only)" in variable qb3t. Respondents who mentioned at least one answer from category ("Illness)" and at least one answer from category ("Symptom)" are coded 3 ("Illness and symptom)" in variable qc3t.

Please note that category 3 ("Illness and symptom") in summarized variable qc3t also includes respondents coded 1 (“Mentioned”) in variable qc3_13 (“ANTIBIOTICS REASON: OTHER (SPONT)”) in addition to their answers from both categories. This is in apparent contradiction to statements in the report.

Variable qc3t was corrected in version v2.0.0.

?:groupDescription
(de)
  • Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
