  • Note:
/ CN: High number of missing values due to the fact that agriculture work is not considered as paid work and people currently working on agriculture/ worked but never did non-agricultural work in the past are filtered out.
/ DK: Due to a filtering error in the questionnaire, all respondents who answered that they are employed in the public sector (answer code 1 of three answer codes of the original question establishing code 1 in EMPREL) were not directly asked about the purpose of the business they work in. This has been compensated for by imputing the value 2 for 'Non-profit organisation' for these respondents for the variable TYPORG1.
/ ES: Due to filtering in the Spanish original questionnaire respondents working in public administration were not asked about TYPORG1, but afterwards assigned to code 2 'Non-profit organization'.
/ ES: The Spanish questionnaire for ISSP 2017 includes an instruction for interviewers to refer questions belonging to variables WRKHRS, EMPREL, NEMPLOY, WRKSUP, NSUP, TYPORG1/2, and ISCO08 to the main wage earner in the household only if the respondent has never worked. These data are not included here.
/ FR: The data includes self-employed as for-profit.
    / GB-GBN: The data includes self-employed as for-profit.
/ NZ: For-profit inlcudes overseas-owned private sector companies or firms + NZ-owned private sector companies or firms + working for own family’s business + self-employed. Non profit includes public sector organisations (e.g. government department, local authority, state-owned enterprise) + non-profit/ charity/ welfare organisations.
/ RU: EMPREL, TYPORG1 and TYPORG2 are derived from the same question.
/ SR: Answer codes were derived from the same questions as for EMPREL and TYPORG2.
/ TW: EMPREL, TYPORG1 and TYPORG2 were derived from the same question.
/ US: In the US questionnaire, there has been a third category 'Government or governmental agency' besides the two categories 'For-profit organization' and 'Non-profit organization'. The 111 respondents of the category 'Government or governmental agencies' have been a posteriori encoded to code 2 'Non-profit organization' at the stage of data harmonization during the integration procedures.
