Note:
/ AT: In the national questionnaire, the two marital status categories 'Divorced' and 'Separated' are collected together. Since it is not possible to clearly separate the two categories with hindsight, they are both included in category 4 'Divorced'. / AU: Category 2 not used, civil partnerships are not relevant in the Australian context. / CZ: Code 2 means 'Registered partnership' (registrované partnerství), possibility to register partnerships for same-sex partners. / DK: Code 2 means 'Registered partnership' (same-sex couples). / FR: Code 2 inlcudes 'Pacsé(e)', a French contract of civil partnership. / HR: Civil partnership is legally defined as living in a common household for a minimum period of 3 years and/ or joint parenthood. / IL: Code 2 means 'Living with a permanent partner with a common life agreement'. / IN: Code 6 includes 125 respondents living in civil partnership. However, civil partnership is only 'partially' a legal form of partnership. It is covered under domestic violence act passed by Parliament and also under the alimony laws in case of separation as mentioned by couple of court judgements. Civil partnership in India is still no 'formal relationship' Supreme Court of India has asked the Parliament to enact a law to regulate live-in relationship. / IS: Code 6 includes 'in unregistered cohabitation'/ 'in registered cohabitation'/ 'I have never been married'/ 'I have never been in a civil partnership'. / LT: There is no legal civil partnership in Lithuania. / MX: Code 2 'Civil partnership' reads 'Sociedad de convivencia' (= same-sex civil unions). / NZ: Code 2 'Civil partnership' includes 'De facto relationship' (for couples living together as a couple but who are not married to or in a civil union with one another; length of relationship at least three years) and 'Civil union'. / SE: Code 2 'Civil partnership' reads 'Registered partnership' (same-sex partners). / SI: Code 2 'Civil partnership' includes extramarital unions and registered homosexual partnerships. / SR: Code 2 'Civil partnership' includes 'Common law marriage'. / US: MARITAL now encompasses both opposite-sex and same-sex marriages (code 1). The US General Social Survey uses POSSLQ and POSSLQY (see note in PARTLIV for US) to track long-term cohabitation, but does not ask about civil partnerships separate from marriage (code 2 not used). / ZA: Previously there were not many of these types of marriages, but the common form of African marriages (Lobola) are now recognized under code 2 'Siviele Verhouding'.
