Note:
/ AT: The questionnaire offered eight countries as answer options (Austria, Germany, Turkey, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia Herzegowina, Macedonia) plus an additional category 'In a different country' which was manually assigned to the right country code in retrospect. / CZ: Countries coded 1-8 including text answers from code 9 were encoded into ISO 3166 country codes. / DE: Former East German territories coded as Germany. / ES: Open ended question for those who were not born in Spain. Countries coded based on a country list used by the Spanish Statistic Institute, then transferred into ISO 3166 codes. / FI: Open-ended question, in retrospect classified according to ISO3166-1. / FR: Open ended question. / MX: Open-ended question, country encoded to ISO 3166. / RU: Open-ended question. / SE: Category 2 open responses recoded following the ISO 3166. Category 1 recoded to 752. Countries not existing today were recoded to present ones, e.g. Soviet Union coded as Russian federation. Those ticking the box that mother or father not born in Sweden but did not write in country of origin were coded as 'Don't know'. / SI: Open ended question. Expected most frequent answers were pre-coded for CAPI (1. Slovenia, 2. Croatia, 3. Bosnia and Hercegovina. 4. Serbia, 5. Montenegro, 6. Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, 7. Kosovo, 8.Yugoslavia. 9. Albania. 10. Austria, 11. Italy, 12. Germany, 13. Hungary), other answers were coded as 'other' and then included in additional variable. Both variables were used to create F_BORN. For very specific countries that could be the basis for the identification of respondents, code 'other countries' was kept. During the harmonization procedure those cases were recoded into code 950 'Outside of COUNTRY (without specification, no offical ISO 3166 code)'. / US: Respondents are not asked for parents' country of birth, only if their parents (one or both) were born in the United States or not. As a result, only two codes are available for the US: Born in the US (code 840 'United Stated') and born outside the US (code 950 'Outside of COUNTRY').
