DEGREE: Comparative - Highest completed degree of education: Categories for international comparison
The aim of this variable is to measure the highest completed education level/ degree of the respondent in order to facilitate international comparison.
Procedure: The degree of education is asked country-specific (see variables AT_DEGR-ZA_DEGR). Then, the harmonized ISSP categories for the variable DEGREE are to be computed from the country-specific degree variables. Correspondence lists between country specific categories and categories of the ISSP DEGREE variable must be reported in detail in the BV documentation template for each country. Since DEGREE is a slightly re-arranged subset of ISCED-97, instructions for actually coding ISCED-97 from nat-DEGR can be used in each country to support the coding of DEGREE.

Note:
/ BE: DEGREE has been derived from the answers to the 18 original categories of the question on resondent's highest completed degree and not from the summarized 13 categories of this question in BE_DEGR. / DE: Question on vocational training only asked if respondent not still at school. Please note that the original data allows for multiple answers. Respondents with multiple educational degrees are coded according to their 'highest' educational entry in the ISSP degree variable. / LV: Primary education until 1961: 7 classes, from 1962-1989: 8 classes, from 1990: 9 classes. / NZ: The DEGREE variable was generated from the first question mentioned above. For respondents of no formal qualification, the secound question was used to filter respondents of no formal qualification into 1. No formal education, 2. Primary and 3. Lower secondary school. / PL: In 1999 there was a change of system education in Poland. Elementary school, which was 8 yrs before 1999 was replaced by compulsory 6 yrs primary school and compulsory 3 yrs gymnasium. Code 1 in DEGREE for Poland means: primary (8yrs) for people born before 1986 and primary (6 yrs) for people born after 1985. Code 2 means gymnasium (3 yrs) and is relevant only for people born after 1985. / SI: Slovenia had some changes in the school system in the last 10 years. Primary school used to be 8 years and is now changed to 9 years. Slovenia is also taking Bologna programs at universities.
