  • ISSP 1987 (ZA1680, V2); ISSP 1992 (ZA2310, V2); ISSP 1999 (ZA3430, V2); ISSP 2009 (ZA5400, V3):

    Respondent Identification Number

The respondents’ ID numbers are those of the integrated data files guaranteeing comparability of the cumulated with the integrated data of each individual module. Corrections were made if all country cases had the same ID number or, in case of double ID numbers in one country. For ZA3430 (1999) country identifiers were integrated in the respondents’ ID numbers. Please note that ID numbers are only unique within their respective country and year of the module. To provide a unique identification across the data files it is necessary to combine V7 and V3.

    in ISSP 1987 + ISSP 1992:
This number is composed of two sections containing seven numbers in total. The first two digits are identical with the country codes (in 1987 codes 01-12 and in 1992 codes 01-18) of variable V3 'COUNTRY'. The digits following behind contain the original identification number. This variable uniquely identifies each respondent within the integrated data set.

    in ISSP 1999:
After implementing the previous ID number standard, this variable is now for all countries composed of two sections containing eight numbers in total. The first two digits are identical with the country codes (01-33) of variable V3 'COUNTRY'. The digits following behind contain the original identification number. This variable uniquely identifies each respondent within this integrated data set.

    in ISSP 2009:
This variable contains the original identification number of respondents without country identification (except for the Philippines, where the ISO 3166 country code 608 is included). The number is 4 up to 7 digits long and is only unique within its respective country's sample (V4).
