    The POLITICAL INTEREST INDEX is based on the answers to the following question: "When you get together with friends or relatives, would you say you discuss frequently, occasionally or never about (national/European/local) political matters?" (qa2_1, qa2_2, and qa2_3). According to the Eurobarometer Report "Eurobarometer 77 - Public Opinion in the European Union" (page 46) the index was constructed by first attributing a score to each item in qa2 (“Never” = 0; “Occasionally” = 1; “Frequently”= 2) and then adding together the three political dimensions (national/European/local). This procedure results in four different index levels ("Not at all interested in politics" if added up score = 0; "Slightly" if added up score = 1 or 2; "Moderately" if added up score = 3 or 4 ; "Strongly" if added up score = 5 or 6) which have been coded accordingly into the categories 1 to 4. Furthermore combinations with DK responses in maximum two variables (qa2_1, qa2_2, and qa2_3) have been coded as follows: "DK" and "Never" = "Not at all"; "DK" and "Never" and "Occasionally" or "Frequently" = "Slightly"; "DK" and "Occasionally" and at least one "Frequently" = "Moderately".

    This new POLITICAL INTEREST INDEX is introduced as C2 starting with EB 73.4. Please notice that in former waves up to EB 69.2 the VALUE ORIENTATION - POST-MATERIALISM index was named C2.

    Compared to the original variable the scale has been inversed by the archive in accordance with former practice. Furthermore responses coded 'DK' to all source variables (qa2_1, qa2_2, and qa2_3) have been recoded to '0' (DK).

  • Seit Anfang der siebziger Jahre erhebt die Europäische Kommission mit dem "Standard and Special Eurobarometer" regelmäßig die öffentliche Meinung in den Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union. Die Befragungen werden jeweils im Frühjahr und im Herbst auf der Grundlage neuer Stichproben mit einer Größe von 1000 Befragten pro Land persönlich durchgeführt. Für Nordirland und Ostdeutschland werden gesonderte Stichproben gezogen. Nach der EU-Erweiterung im Jahr 2004 werden auch die verbleibenden und die neuen Beitrittskandidaten regelmäßig in ausgewählte Umfragen einbezogen. Die Standard-Eurobarometer-Module fragen nach der Einstellung zur europäischen Einigung, zu den Institutionen und zur Politik, ergänzt durch Messungen zu allgemeinen soziopolitischen Orientierungen sowie zu den demografischen Merkmalen der Befragten und der Haushalte. In unregelmäßigen Abständen befassen sich spezielle Eurobarometer-Module ausführlich mit Themen wie Umwelt, Wissenschaft und Technologie, Gesundheit oder Familie, soziale oder ethnische Ausgrenzung, Lebensqualität usw. Die "European Communities Studies" 1970-1973 können als Vorläuferstudien angesehen werden, ebenso wie die "Attitudes towards Europe" von 1962. (de)
  • Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
