    / SK: In Slovakia, the relevant ethnicity concept is the nationality concept. In censuses as well as in surveys, only self declared nationality is asked. The same concept is applied also towards the Roma (under communist rule the term 'Gipsy' was used). Roma can declare themselves as belonging to the Roma nationality - however as can be confirmed by pre 1990s censuses (under the communist regime, it was the census commissars who decided if a person belongs to the Roma ethnicity) and by other methods of estimation of the Roma population in Slovakia, many of them do not describe themselves as Roma and rather declare a belonging to the Slovak or Hungarian nationality (in regions with a Hungarian majority).
