AT_ETHN - Austria: Country specific origin country/ ethnic group/ ethnic identity/ family origin
Do you have the Austrian citizenship? Which language has been used primarily in your childhood’s family? From which country do your parents come from?

Note:
/ AT: Concept of ethnicity: We first distinguish between ‘native citizens’, ‘new citizens’ and ‘non-citizens’. Due to reasons of differentiations and inequalities also within these groups we further distinguish respondents by family origin (language in parent’s home and country of parent’s origin) and religious denomination. A multidimensional typology is based on the following four aspects:
a) Citizenship: Yes or No (source variable: f92) b) Language in parents home: German or other language (source variable: f94) c) Family origin: Parents are Austrian or from other country (source variable: f93) d) Religion (see AT_relig): Christian or other denomination (source variable: f78)
Based on these variables we can construct eight types of ethnic group membership for Austria. 1. Native citizen – majority member: native German speaking Austrian citizens, all religious denominations 2. Native citizen – minority member: non-German speaking Austrian citizens, all religious denominations; members of Austrian minorities (mainly Croatians, Hungarians, Sinti and Romanies, Slovenians) 3. New citizen – German speaker: Immigrated Austrian citizen with German speaking background, all religious denominations 4. New citizen – non-German speaker, Christian: Immigrated Austrian citizen with non-German speaking background, and Christian denomination 5. New citizen – non-German speaker, non-Christian: Immigrated Austrian citizen with non-German speaking background, and denomination other than Christian 6. Non-citizen – German speaker: No citizen with German speaking background, all religious denominations (Respondents from Germany or from German region of Switzerland mainly) 7. Non-citizen – non-German speaker, Christian: No citizen with non-German speaking background, Christian denomination 8. Non-citizen – non-German speaker, non-Christian: No citizen with non-German speaking background, denomination other than Christian
For defining the three main groups in an easy way, we use two-digit codes. The first digit shows the distinction about citizenship: ‘1’ means Native citizens, ‘2’ means New citizens, and ‘3’ means Non-citizens. The second digit shows the distinctions in the other dimensions.
