    Split-Ballot: Stimulus Experiment

    ALLBUS 1980 used a two group split-ballot design to test for the effect of stimulus variations on the responses to a number of questions. At three points during the interview, the wording of the questions each split-half received was varied. The following questions were part of the split experiment:

    id01 - Fair share of standard of living: split 1 ‘your fair share of the good things in live’ / split 2 ‘your fair share’

    pc01-pc11 - Societal conflicts: split 1 ‘conflicts of interest’ / split 2 ‘oppositions of interest’

    casex, caage, casn10, cawork, cadw01, casn12, cbsex, cbage, cbsn10, cbwork, cbdw01, cbsn12, ccsex, ccage, ccsn10, ccwork, ccdw01, ccsn12, sn19-sn21 - ego-centred networks, only the network generator was varied: in split 1 respondents were asked to name three “people you spend a lot of time with socially”, while in split 2 respondents were asked to name “three people you think of as closer friends and whom you meet most frequently”.

  • The German General Social Survey (ALLBUS) collects up-to-date data on attitudes, behavior, and social structure in Germany. Every two years since 1980 a representative cross section of the population is surveyed using both constant and variable questions.
