    Split ballot: mn01-mn09 (alternate questions)

    ALLBUS 2016 used a two-group split-ballot design to increase the total number of questions surveyed in the focus module on ‘Attitudes towards ethnic groups in Germany’. The two split versions each fielded a different question on the topic ‘being German’.
    Split 1 replicated a question battery previously surveyed in 1996 and 2006, which asked about criteria for naturalization as a German citizen (mn01-mn09). Split 2 fielded a newly developed set of questions asking in how far migrants could become ‚real Germans‘ (mn10) and what it would take for them to be regarded as such (mn10-mn21). In contrast to the older questions, which focused on the, arguably more bureaucratic, issue of citizenship, the newly developed set of questions aims at the prerequisites and possibility of a true, cultural integration of migrants.
    As the questions from split 2 have not been replicated yet, they have not been included in this data set. The relevant data can instead be found in mn10 and mn11-mn21 in ZA5250.
