  • Description of variable:
    Split-Ballot: Comparison of Occupational Success

ALLBUS 2014 used a two-group split-ballot design to test for the effect of different response scales with regard to the question on relative occupational status compared to the respondent’s mother and father. Respondents in both split-halves were asked to evaluate their own occupational status in comparison to that of their mother and their father. Respondents in split 1 received the four-point scale previously used in the ALLBUS-program. The response options were: “much higher”, “somewhat higher”, “roughly the same” and “lower”. Respondents in split 2 received a five-point scale which differentiated the category “lower” into two categories “somewhat lower” and “much lower”.

The split-ballot experiment showed that the different response scales did not have a statistically significant effect on response behaviour. For this cumulated data set, the data from both split-halves was therefore merged in a single variable (di04). To this end, the categories “somewhat lower” and “much lower” from split 2 were recoded to “lower”.
Please note that only the question referring to the occupational status of the respondent’s father is included in this data set, because the question referring to the mother’s occupational status has not been replicated yet.

(de)
