  • Derivation of data:
    Age calculation for all ALLBUS surveys followed these basic steps: First, age was calculated by subtracting the year of birth (sfyborn) from the year of survey (year). Next, month of the interview (xt02) and month of birth (sfmborn) were compared. If the month of the interview preceded the month of the respondent’s birthday, the previously calculated age was reduced by 1.

    When there was no valid information on either the month of birth or the month of the interview, no further adjustment of the previously calculated age was made.

    When there was no valid information on the year of birth, age was assigned the code -32 ‘cannot be generated’.

    In 1991 no information on the date of the interview was available. Therefore, the following heuristic was applied to calculate age: The middle of the fieldwork phase, i.e. the month of June, was set as the default value for the month of the interview. Age was then calculated using the basic rules outlined above.
