In 1982 this variable was surveyed as part of a split questionnaire (comp. splt82).

    Meaning of life

The item battery on meaning of life (ra01-ra06) is part of the module ‘Religion and World View’. Both the content of the item battery and the survey mode used to field the questions varied over time.

    - The module ‘Religion and World View’ was first surveyed in ALLBUS 1982. The item battery on meaning of life contained a total of ten items. Only four of these original questions are part of this cumulative data set (ra01, ra02, ra03 and ra05), the rest has not been replicated in subsequent ALLBUS surveys. In 1982, this part of the survey was administered as a self-completion questionnaire.

    - ALLBUS 1992 surveyed an updated version of the module ‘Religion and Worldview’. The item battery on meaning of life now comprised six items (ra01 to ra06), four of which were replicated from the 1982 survey. The questions were administered by an interviewer using a paper questionnaire (PAPI).

    - ALLBUS 2002 and ALLBUS 2012 replicated the 1992 module ‘Religion and Worldview’ with the six-item battery on meaning of life (ra01 to ra06). The questions were administered by an interviewer using an electronic questionnaire (CAPI).
