    In 2008 and 2012, this derived variable was part of the ISSP-modules surveyed together with ALLBUS. As a rule ISSP-data are not included in this cumulative data set. However, because the question documented here has also been part of the ALLBUS-interview several times, the ISSP-data was included in this data set. Please note that, in contrast to the ALLBUS interview, the ISSP-modules are surveyed as self-completion questionnaires.

  • Derivation of data:
    The data in this variable was calculated based on the information in hs16 (body height) and hs17 (weight):

    BMI (hs18) = weight in kg (hs17) / (body height in meters (hs16) x body height in meters (hs16))

    Results were rounded to two decimal places.
    Variable hs18 was coded as -32 ‘cannot be generated’ if there was no valid information for one or both of the variables hs16 (body height) and hs17 (weight).

    Body-Mass-Index (BMI)

  • Note:
    Body-Mass-Index

    The Body-Mass-Index (BMI) is used as a general guideline to evaluate human body weight in relation to height. It is defined as the weight of a person (in kg) divided by the square of the person's height (in m):

    BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) * height (m))

    As an individual-level indicator of health risks, BMI has some generally recognized shortcomings (comp. World Health Organization (2000), 8-9). It is, however, an established and widely used population-level measure in national and international public health reporting (for the German context compare for example Arbeitsgemeinschaft der obersten Landesgesundheitsbehörden (2003), 376-379). In World Health Organization (2000) BMI is characterized as „the most useful, albeit crude population-level measure of obesity“ (9).

?:groupDescription
(de)
  • The German General Social Survey (ALLBUS) collects up-to-date data on attitudes, behavior, and social structure in Germany. Every two years since 1980 a representative cross section of the population is surveyed using both constant and variable questions. The ALLBUS data become available to interested parties for research and teaching as soon as they are processed and documented. (en)
