Derivation of data:
The European Socio-economic Groups (ESeG) Classification uses information on labor force participation (work, dw03) and on the current or last occupation (occupational position (dw01, dw01a) and the ISCO-08 classification of the current or last occupation (isco08, isco08a)) to group persons according to their socio-economic position. EseG distinguishes nine main groups (codes 10, 20, 30, etc.) and 42 subgroups (codes 11-14, 21-25, etc.).
Persons who are in paid work (codes 1, 2 in work) are assigned to one of the subgroups 11 to 74 based on their current occupational position (dw01) and their current job (isco08). If no subgroup can be assigned, the corresponding main group is coded. If no main group can be assigned, group 1 "Employed persons whose occupation or status in employment is not known" is coded for those who are in paid work.
Persons who are unemployed (code 3 in dw03) are assigned to one of the subgroups 11 to 74 based on their last occupational position (dw01a) and their last job (isco08a). If no subgroup can be assigned, the corresponding main group is coded. If no main group can be assigned, group 2 “Unemployed persons whose previous occupation or status in employment is not known or who never had a job” is coded for those who are unemployed.
Retired persons (code 2 in dw03) are assigned to subgroups 81 to 87 based on their last occupational position (dw01a) and their last job (dw01a). If this is not possible, retired persons are assigned to main group 80 “Retired persons - not further specified”.
All other economically inactive persons are assigned to subgroups 91 “Students” (code 1 in dw03) and 99 “Other persons outside the labor force not elsewhere classified” (codes 4-6 in dw03).
Cases that cannot be assigned to any group due to lack of information (code -9 in work or code -9 in dw03) are coded as -32 "Cannot be generated".

Note:
The European Socio-economic Groups (ESeG) Classification is a tool for measuring socio-economic status. It was developed on behalf of Eurostat and is designed specifically to enable transnational comparisons between the countries of the European Union. ESeG updates the European Socio-economic Classification (ESeC). It was first published in 2014 and subsequently revised in 2016. The version used here corresponds to the revision from 2016.
