    For 1980-1986 and 1991 the data in this variable was reconstructed based on the information in mstat RESPONDENT: MARITAL STATUS and df11b WIDOW.,DIV.: YEAR OF WEDDING, MARRIAGE 2.

    Cases were coded as married more than once if they identified as being widowed or divorced (codes 3, 4, 8 and 9 in mstat) and also reported on a second marriage in the questions on marital history (not code -10 ‘not applicable, no second marriage’ in df11b).
    Cases that identified as not widowed or divorced (codes 1, 2, 5-7 in mstat) were coded as -10 ’not applicable’.
    If there was no valid information on the respondent’s marital status, the case was coded as -32 ‘cannot be generated’.

Every two years since 1980 a representative cross section of the population is surveyed using both constant and variable questions.
