  • Derivation of data:
    For 1980-1988 and 1991, the data in this variable was reconstructed based on the information in mstat RESPONDENT: MARITAL STATUS and df11a MARRIED: YEAR OF WEDDING, MARRIAGE 2.

    Cases were coded as married for the first time if the respondent identified as being married (codes 1, 2, 6 and 7 in mstat) and reported no second marriage in the questions on marital history (code -10 ‘not applicable, no second marriage’ in df11a).
    Respondents who were not married (codes 3-5, 8, 9 in mstat) were coded as -10 ’not applicable, not married’.
    If there was no valid information on the respondent’s marital status, the case was coded as -32 ‘cannot be generated’.
