    Source: In 1991 OPCS introduced a new occupation coding schema, the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC). "Occupations are viewed in SOC as coherent sets of work activities carried on by individuals. In defining occupational groups, the aim has been to distinguish as far as possible in terms of the type and level of skills required to carry out the main work activities" (OPCS, 1991b, p.2).
