  • Monthly household income in Euros (x1000) for purchasing power parity

EVS 1999: For each country, the national currency is converted into Euros and corrected for purchasing power parity (PPP). PPP is derived from the IMF World Economic Outlook Database (October 2008 Edition). The mean exchange rate was calculated over the survey period. The exchange rates were taken from OANDA - Forex Trading and Exchange Rates Services (we used the 'bid' interbank exchange rate) for the countries Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey. For Northern Ireland the exchange rates came from the European Central Bank. Information on income was missing for the countries Belarus, Finland, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Great Britain, Ukraine.

EVS 2008: For each country, the national currency is converted into Euros and corrected for purchasing power parity (PPP). PPP is derived from the IMF World Economic Outlook Database (October 2008 Edition). For Montenegro the World Bank statistics 2009 were used and for Kosovo the CIA World Factbook 2009. The year(s) in which the data were collected, form(s) the basis for the calculation of the PPP rates. For non-euro countries, the mean exchange rate was calculated over the survey period. Exchange rates came from the European Central Bank for Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Republic of Macedonia, Republic of Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. For the other countries, the exchange rates were taken from OANDA - Forex Trading and Exchange Rates Services (we used the 'bid' interbank exchange rate).

To construct a linear income variable, the mid-points of the country specific categories were taken; for the first category, the mid-point is its upper bound minus half the range of the second category, e.g., if (1) <500 Euro and (2) 500-800 Euro, then the mid-point of the first category is: 500-(800-500)/2=350 Euro.

To compute the mid-point of the last category, an equal range for the last and the penultimate category was assumed, e.g., if (one but last category) 7.500-10.000 Euro and (last category) >10.000 Euro, then the mid-point of the last category is: 10.000+(2.500/2)=11.250 Euro.

(de)
  • The European Values Study is a large-scale, cross-national and longitudinal survey research program conducted under the responsibility of the European Values Study Foundation since 1981. The cross-sectional surveys, repeated in a 9-year cycle, cover a broad range of topics on central areas of life such as work and leisure time, family and sexuality, religion, politics and ethics. The EVS holding includes integrated datasets on every EVS wave and, in addition, the national datasets for the 1999 and 2008 waves. Questions repeated at least twice in EVS, or EVS and WVS, are cumulated in the EVS Trend File. The EVS Trend File can easily be merged with the World Values Survey (WVS) Trend File into the Integrated Values Surveys Data File. (en)
