  • Derivation:
Starting with EB69.2 the coding of this variable is basically standardized in accordance with the “ZEUS Party Family Code” which was developed for the "Mannheim Eurobarometer Trend File" (GESIS study ZA3521). The standard is based on a three digit coding. The first digit represents the party family and is consistent across countries. The second and third digits identify the individual party within this family and are country-specific (not comparable across countries). The assignment of parties to families is done according to their OVERALL ideological orientations. Nevertheless the consistency of party coding over time is maintained with priority. Former standard party codes as applied for archive dataset editions up to Eurobarometer 56.3 are reported in brackets, if applicable.

The slightly modified ZEUS Party Family Codes are: The ZEUS Party Family codes are: (001-099) Not-assigned; (100-199) Communists; (200-299) Socialists; (300-399) Liberals; (400-499) Christian-Democrats; (500-599) Conservatives; (600-699) Extreme Right / Nationalists; (700-799) Regionalists, Ethnic parties (modified); (800-899) Environmental Parties; (900-949) Agricultural Parties; (950-979) Independent candidates, special issue parties or splinter groups (modified); (980-989) electoral alliances across party family groups (new). Codes 990-999 contain the response "Other party" and various missing value responses. Users may modify these codings or part of these codings in order to suit their needs such as possible alternative ideological party classifications.

?:groupDescription
(de)
  • Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962.
