In 2010, this question was part of the ISSP-modules surveyed together with ALLBUS. As a rule ISSP-questions are not included in this cumulative data set. However, because the question documented here has also been part of the ALLBUS-interview several times, the ISSP-data was included in this data set. Please note that, in contrast to the ALLBUS interview, the ISSP-modules are surveyed as self-completion questionnaires.

The exact wording of the 2010 ISSP-question in the German questionnaire differs slightly from the question used in ALLBUS (comp. V836). The ISSP-source
    questionnaire uses this wording:
"In this first job, what was your main occupation?
Describe fully, using two words or more (do not use initials or abbreviations).

International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO 1988)

    Source:
International Labour Office (ed.) 1990: International Standard Classification of Occupations. ISCO-88, Geneva: International Labour Office.

Until 2010, the answers to the open question on occupations were coded by GESIS based on the official German translation of the source cited above, which was provided by the 'Federal Statistical Office' (Statistisches Bundesamt).
As of 2012, ISCO coding was performed by infas (infas Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft GmbH, Friedrich-Wilhelm-Str. 18, 53113 Bonn).

Please refer to ‘Appendix B’ of the variable report for a comprehensive list of codes used in the data.
