  • Comment:
In 1990 this variable was surveyed as part of a split questionnaire (comp. splt90).

In 2004, 2012 and 2014 this question was part of the ISSP-modules surveyed together with ALLBUS. As a rule ISSP-questions are not included in this cumulative data set. However, because the question documented here has also been part of the ALLBUS-interview several times, the ISSP-data was included in this data set. Please note that, in contrast to the ALLBUS interview, the ISSP-modules are surveyed as self-completion questionnaires.

  • Derivation of data:
Because skip patterns for this question changed substantially over the years, it was necessary to revise the assignment and coding of missing values to allow a useful cumulation of the data. Therefore, the coding of missing data in this data set differs significantly from the coding used in the cross-section data sets. In the cumulated data there are only three categories of missing data: code 0 ‘Not available’, code 98 ‘Don’t know’ and code 99 ‘No answer’. Cases that skipped this question for other reasons in the original surveys are documented in codes 10-13.

    Original skip patterns:

    - From 1984 to 1990 respondents were screened out if they reported being ineligible to vote (code 2 in V27). Additionally, residents of West-Berlin (code 0 in V27) were screened out, because they were not eligible to vote in national elections.

    - In 1991, 1992, 1998, 2002 and 2004 only respondents who reported being ineligible to vote (code 2 in V27) were screened out. Residents of West-Berlin no longer needed to be automatically screened out because they were by then regular German citizens and thus eligible to vote in national elections.

    - In the surveys between 2006 and 2012, no respondents were screened out. However, in 2006 respondents could choose 'Not eligible to vote' as an explicit response option.
