Derivation of data:
1980-1982: Age was calculated by subtracting the year of birth (V1566) from the year of survey (year). When there was no valid information on the year of birth, age was assigned the same missing value category as year of birth.
2000, 2002 und 2006-2014: Age was calculated by subtracting the year of birth from the year of survey (year). Additionally, the following heuristic was used: When the interview had taken place in the first half of the year, it was assumed that the interview had been conducted before the person’s birthday and the age calculated from year of birth and year of survey was reduced by 1. When there was no valid information on the year of birth, age was assigned the same missing value category as year of birth.
2004: In the 2004 survey, month of birth (not included in this data set) was surveyed in addition to year of birth and the additional information was included in the calculation of age: First, age was calculated by subtracting the year of birth from the year of survey (year). Next, month of the interview (V1874) and month of birth were compared. If the month of the interview preceded the month of the person’s birthday, the previously calculated age was reduced by 1. When there was no valid information on either the month of birth or the month of the interview, no further adjustment of the previously calculated age was made. When there was no valid information on the year of birth, age was assigned the same missing value category as year of birth.
