Derivation of data:
From 1980 to 1984 ALLBUS used a single question to collect data on the respondent’s current spouse, if the respondent was married, or alternatively on the respondent’s previous spouse, if the respondent was widowed or divorced. The data was originally stored in the same variable. For this cumulative data set, the information on current and previous spouses was recoded into separate variables.
In ALLBUS 1980 to ALLBUS 1984 respondents were asked to indicate the occupational training of their spouse by choosing their spouse's last occupational qualification from a list of categories (V1045). Only one answer was permitted. As of 1986, the ALLBUS program uses a multiple response question to collect information on occupational training (compare V1046-V1059). For this cumulative data set, information from this multiple response question (V1046-V1049, V1051-V1053 and V1055-V1059) was recoded in such a way that the data could be merged with the data in V1045. Thus, the time series for V1045 could be extended to cover the period up to 1990. However, due to the largely incomparable systems of education in former East Germany and West Germany, the practice of reconstructing V1045 has been discontinued after 1990.
Users wishing to work with the data in V1045 should take into account the following particularities of the reconstructed data:
- As there is no indication which qualification from the multiple response question is actually the last one, it was assumed that the highest qualification was also the last qualification.
- There is a possibility that the extended list of categories used from 1988 onwards influenced the respondents' answers.
- The response options for the multiple response question contain the additional code 9 'Completed other occupational training'.
- Until 1984, code 1 explicitly includes respondents who attended a vocational school without being in a traineeship scheme.
- In 1980-1984 code 3 was 'Completed commercial or other traineeship'. As of 1986 this category has been restricted to 'Completed commercial traineeship' (compare V1052).
These differences in the actual survey practice can lead to bias in the data. One obvious example is code 3 'Completed commercial or other traineeship'. The frequency count in the reconstructed data is noticeably lower than that in the data for 1980 to 1984.

The German General Social Survey (ALLBUS) collects up-to-date data on attitudes, behavior, and social structure in Germany. Every two years since 1980 a representative cross section of the population is surveyed using both constant and variable questions. The ALLBUS data become available to interested parties for research and teaching as soon as they are processed and documented.
