  • Derivation of data:
    From 1980 to 1984 ALLBUS used a single question to collect data on the respondent’s current spouse, if the respondent was married, or alternatively on the respondent’s previous spouse, if the respondent was widowed or divorced. The data was originally stored in the same variable. For this cumulative data set, the information on current and previous spouses was recoded into separate variables.

    This variable has been recoded so as to conform with the standardized ALLBUS coding. The sequence of answer categories shown in this documentation may therefore deviate from that actually used in the field.

Every two years since 1980 a representative cross section of the population is surveyed using both constant and variable questions.
