  • Derivation of data:
    Basic rules for calculating age

Age calculation for all ALLBUS surveys followed these basic steps: First, age was calculated by subtracting the year of birth (V1039) from the year of survey (year). Next, month of the interview (V1874) and month of birth (V1040) were compared. If the month of the interview preceded the month of the respondent’s birthday, the previously calculated age was reduced by 1.
When there was no valid information on either the month of birth or the month of the interview, no further adjustment of the previously calculated age was made.
When there was no valid information on the year of birth, age was assigned the same missing value category as year of birth.

    Additional heuristics

For the 1986 and 1990 data, the following heuristic was additionally applied when there was no valid information on the month of the interview: When the respondent’s month of birth came after the last month of fieldwork, it could be assumed that the respondent had not yet turned one year older and the age calculated from year of birth and year of survey was reduced by 1.

In 1991 no information on the date of the interview was available. Therefore, the following heuristic was applied to calculate age: The middle of the fieldwork phase, i.e. the month of June, was set as the default value for the month of the interview. Age was then calculated using the basic rules outlined above.

For the 2000-2004 data, the following heuristic was additionally applied when the month of the interview was the same as the respondent’s month of birth: If the interview had taken place between the first and the fifteenth day of the month, it was assumed that the respondent had been interviewed before his or her birthday and the age calculated from year of birth and year of survey was reduced by 1.

(de)

Every two years since 1980 a representative cross section of the population is surveyed using both constant and variable questions. The ALLBUS data become available to interested parties for research and teaching as soon as they are processed and documented. (en)
