    Split-Ballot: Health of Respondent

    ALLBUS 2014 used a two-group split-ballot design to test for the effect of different response scales with regard to the question on the respondents’ health. Respondents in both split-halves were asked to evaluate their general state of health. Respondents in split 1 received the five-point scale previously used in the ALLBUS-program. The response options were: “very good”, “good”, “satisfactory”, “not that good” and “bad”. Respondents in split 2 received a six-point scale which extended the positive end of the scale to include the option “excellent”.

    As the split-ballot experiment showed that the two response scales produce statistically significant differences, the data of the two splits was stored in separate variables. The exact wording of the question texts used in the split versions is documented with each variable:

    V495: split 1 – state of health (five-point response scale)
    V496: split 2 – state of health (six-point response scale)
