    (en)
  • Derivation:
This scale is based on the recommendation of the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research to harmonise the measurement of social grade across borders. This approach uses three different types of input variables:

    I) Occupation of the main income earner (MIE) is based on 16
    occupation groups E1 to E16:
E1 General management, director or top management
    (6 employees or more)
    E2 Self employed professional
    E3 Employed professional
E4 General management, director or top management

    E5 Middle management, other management
    (6 employees or more)
    E6 Middle management, other management

E8 employed position, working mainly at a desk
E9 business proprietors, owner (full/partner) of company
    (5 employees or less)
    E10 student
E11 employed position, not at a desk but travelling or in
    a service job
    E12 farmer and fisherman
E13 responsible for ordinary shopping and looking after
    the home, housewife
E14 supervisor and skilled manual worker
E15 other (unskilled) manual worker, servant
E16 retired or unable to work through illness, unemployed
    or temporarily not working
II) The education level of the main income earner (MIE) is
based on a classification into 6 groups of education level
(adjusting the finishing age of general education in accor-
dance with extra general education or specific apprenticeship
    and/or professional training): 1) up to 14 years; 2) 15-16
    years; 3) 17-18 years; 4) 19-20 years; 5) 21-24 years;
    6) 25 years and over.
III) Household ownership of selected durable is based on
ownership in terms of number of products owned (D.14):
    a colour TV set - a video recorder - a video camera - a
    radio-clock - a PC/home computer - a still camera - an elec-
tric drill - an electric deep fat fryer - two or more cars -
    a second home or a holiday home/flat.

The combination of these input variables results in a new social grade classification with, as categories (upper to lower): A B C D E1 E2 E3. For more details see standard report EUROBAROMETER 42, December 1994, Brussels, C.9

(de)
  • Since the early nineteen seventies the European Commission´s “Standard and Special Eurobarometer” are regularly monitoring the public opinion in the European Union member countries at times. Interviews are conducted face-to-face, in each spring and each autumn, at all times based on new samples with a size 1000 respondents per country. Separate samples are drawn for Northern Ireland and East Germany. After the EU enlargement in 2004, remaining and new Candidate Countries are also regularly included in selected surveys. The Standard Eurobarometer modules ask for attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, complemented by measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as by respondent and household demographics. Intermittently special Eurobarometer modules extensively address topics, such as environment, science and technology, health or family issues, social or ethnic exclusion, quality of life etc. The “European Communities Studies” 1970-1973 can be considered forerunner studies, as well the “Attitudes towards Europe” from 1962. • The European Election Studies (EES) offer data about electoral behaviour in European Parliament elections. Collecting survey data as well as a variety of other data types, they cover topics such as the evolution of a political community in the European Union, citizens´ perceptions of and preferences about the EU political regime, and the evaluation of its political performance. Besides ´voter surveys´ conducted since 1979, the EES program comprises political elite surveys, media studies and the Euromanifestos project, which is content-coding Party Manifestos. The EES offer extensive opportunities for comparative and longitudinal analyses across the EU member states. (en)
