?:abstract
  • Opinions regarding free trade are subject to influence from a variety of factors. Traditional trade theory suggests that individual viewpoints on trade are primarily based on economic gains and losses. Additionally, an individual's worldview, such as liberalism, as well as their trust in political institutions, also play a significant role in shaping their opinion on free trade. This study empirically examines the advantages and disadvantages of trade policies and their determinants using the case of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), a free trade agreement promoted between the European Union (EU) and the United States. The analysis reveals that individual characteristics, including age, education level, political orientation, assessment of the economic situation, and future prospects, have a significant impact on support for TTIP. Specifically, younger individuals with higher education levels and right-leaning political views tend to be more supportive of the trade agreement with the US. Moreover, a positive evaluation of the economic situation and a personal interest in non-trade issues, such as employment, environment, and health, also influence support for TTIP. Additionally, trust in political institutions, such as the government, and a positive perception of the EU system, are found to positively affect support for TTIP. The implications of this study are as follows. Firstly, for an open trade policy, it is crucial to enhance citizens' awareness of the impacts of trade and establish a domestic system that ensures fair distribution of trade benefits. Secondly, as trade agreements expand in scope, citizens' awareness of trade is likely to become intertwined with social issues, such as the environment and welfare, necessitating a more comprehensive approach in formulating trade policies compared to the past. Lastly, social capital, including trust in political institutions, forms the social foundation for sustaining an open trade policy. (xsd:string)
